In February 2003, the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies was chosen by Peace Corps to be a host institution for its Master's International Program. The Peace Corps Master's International Program was established in 1987 to meet two needs: the increasing demand from overseas for Peace Corps Volunteers (PCVs) with high levels of education and technical expertise; and the desire of universities to provide substantive, internationally focused experiences for their students. The new Peace Corps Master's International Programs at the Andrew Young School will allow Peace Corps Volunteers to combine a Master's degree from the Department of Economics or the Department of Public Administration and Urban Studies with a two-year Peace Corps tour. Each graduate student/PCV chosen under this program will work closely with an academic advisor to exploit the synergy potential between classroom work and field experience. Students on this program will be academically advised in a manner to fully exploit the Peace Corps experience to enrich the students' academic experience through thesis research, directed readings, and internships. Students beginning their program of study in the fall semester (mid-August), will be ready for their overseas assignment in the following fall (late August or September) or winter (January).
