Macroeconomic Policies for Sustainable Development (2007)
(June 25 - July 6, 2007)

Course Summary
Sustainable development is development that meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Its comprehensive approach combines economic development with environmental sustainability, community and regional development, poverty alleviation, healthcare and education, political and civic development, and capacity building in science and public policy, among others.

Macroeconomic Policies for Sustainable Development exposes public policy makers and policy analysts to key economic policy issues that are relevant to achieving sustainable development in developing and transition countries, and provides participants with the current reseach and best-practice approaches to achieving sustainable development. Some of the topics addressed by this course include:

  • How can government services better work for the poor?
  • What is the role of NGO’s and other civil society institutions in the process of development?
  • How to implement a cost benefit analysis of proposed environmental policies?
  • How can government policies promote the development of financial markets? What is the role of micro credit?
  • What is the role of institutions and good governance in the development process?
  • How to design economic reforms that are politically sustainable?

This course provides participants with the most current understanding and approaches to these and other sustainable development policy issues. It consists of lectures, seminars, roundtable discussions, workshops, participants’ presentations and on-site visits to policy making institution in the United States. The course also introduces participants to basic research skills needed to conduct informed analysis of the issues covered in the course. Participants apply principles learned in the course to assess the strengths and weaknesses of different policies in their own countries and work individually with faculty members to analyze particular policy questions which they bring to the course. This course is taught in English.
