Policies for Economic Growth in the Global Economy (2008)

Course
Summary
Policies for Economic Growth in the Global Economy exposes policymakers and
policy analysts to economic ideas and practices that are implemented to encourage
economic development recognizing the importance of international
economic linkages in today’s world.
Raising the standard of living is the ultimate goal of sound economic policy.
This course provides participants with the most current understanding of macroeconomic
policy issues and how to deal with them. Topics covered in this
course include: economic development policies and the determinants of economic
growth in the short-run and in the long-run, the role of financial system
development on innovation and access to entrepreneurial capital, the adoption
of new technologies, the importance of fiscal stability, exchange rate issues,
financial crises, and international trade and investment. Additionally, the course
discusses the features of an efficient and growth-promoting tax system.
Participants apply principles learned in the course to assess the strengths and
weaknesses of different policies in their own countries and work individually
with faculty members to analyze particular policy questions of their interest.
This topic-driven course consists of lectures, seminars, workshops, and roundtable
discussions.
Furthermore, a series of applied workshops expose course participants to the
basic skills of data analysis. Participants learn to apply these skills to issues and
data from their own countries with the assistance of course instructors.
